The week ahead 5th October 2025
Dear Glebe Families,
We had a great day on Friday, exploring different careers! Some of our children have a clear plan, some have ideas and some have no idea which is fine! The important part is they believe there is an exciting future for them, whatever career path they may think about in the future, as long as they focus on learning and as in our School Development Plan 3 – achieve “Continuous Personal Bests”.
We are looking forward to seeing how the children’s “Job Interviews” with adults at home went when they bring in their sheets on Monday!
My thanks again to all our volunteers. We are looking to do this again in the Spring Term – it would be great if you took part!
*DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR PARENT MEETINGS – it is in your SCHOOL PING app!*
FIVE REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD:
1. BLACK HISTORY MONTH – POWER AND PRIDE
This week, our Y5 children had a special Art workshop led by artist Olivia Gee and all children took part in an online poetry performance led by Valerie Bloom, a renowned poet! We are continuing our learning about black history by launching an exciting competition. You’ve heard of Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama but have you heard of Garrett Morgan or Katherine Johnson? We are inviting children to research a black figure who has made a difference in the world and create art-work, a fact-file, a poem or speech! See below for details!
2. FLU IMMUNISATIONS
We sent you all a school PING message on 15th September (under “My Messages”). The link to complete to protect your child from seasonal flu illnesses is here – you are also asked to complete it if you are choosing for your child NOT to have the flu immunisation. These will happen later this month: www.nwl.schoolvaccination.uk/flu/2025/harrow

These are tomorrow, MONDAY 6TH OCTOBER.

LUCY "The Space” Family Support Idea for the Week:
Supporting Your Child in a Digital World
Many children and young people spend a significant part of their day online—for school, gaming, socialising, or exploring their interests. While the internet provides exciting opportunities to learn and connect, it can also expose them to risks such as inappropriate content, online bullying, or becoming overly reliant on screen time. Some children may even begin to show signs of screen dependency, including mood swings when not online, withdrawing from family life, or struggling to sleep after late-night device use.
By recognising these behaviours early and supporting children with guidance and structure, we can help them build a healthy, balanced relationship with technology.
How Can Parents and Carers Help?
There are lots of simple, effective ways to promote safer, more balanced online habits at home. Here are some key tips:
✅ Talk Regularly
Start open conversations with your child about their online world. Ask:
- What apps or games are you using?
- Who do you talk to online?
- Have you ever seen anything that made you feel uncomfortable?
✅ Set Clear Boundaries
- Keep screens out of bedrooms overnight
- Set agreed screen time limits
- Encourage regular breaks and offline activities
- Establish screen-free zones like the dinner table
✅ Watch for Warning Signs of Screen Overuse
Children may be using screens too much if you notice:
- Irritability or frustration when devices are taken away
- Loss of interest in non-digital hobbies
- Sleep disruption or staying up late online
- Avoiding homework or responsibilities
- Sneaking devices or lying about screen use
- Withdrawing from face-to-face social time
✅ Use Parental Controls
- Enable filters and safety features on devices
- Use apps like Google Family Link, Apple Screen Time, or Microsoft Family Safety
✅ Know What They’re Using
Familiarise yourself with apps and platforms like:
- TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, Discord, Roblox, YouTube
Many of these have chat or livestreaming features, so it’s important to stay involved.
✅ Encourage Healthy Habits
- Promote a balance of online and offline activities
- Encourage creative screen use (e.g. coding, drawing, learning)
- Teach critical thinking—how to spot scams, fake content, and how to protect personal information
👶 Tips by Age Group
Under 8s
- Use child-safe, age-appropriate apps
- Always supervise screen time
Ages 9–12
- Begin discussing online safety and privacy
- Talk about peer pressure, digital friendships, and kindness online
Teens (13+)
- Talk about reputation, relationships, mental health, and screen independence
- Support them in managing their own screen time responsibly
Sometimes we could all do with someone to talk to.

THE GLEBE GOSSIP POLL RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK:
3 questions...one on GLEBE, one on EDUCATION, one on LIFE.
Did you get involved last year? Look out for this EVERY TUESDAY to be completed by THURSDAY and results shared on a SUNDAY! It is a bit of fun and a way to easily capture what our Glebe community think and feel about school life and education...and indeed life!

Overwhelmingly, you feel we have the uniform about right which is great. As always, if you need financial support for uniform, please let us know.
This was an interesting result. 79% of you would support this as long as there was a childcare option. School budgets are tight – and our income generation comes from pupil numbers on roll and lettings. All London schools have falling numbers so please do all you can to help Glebe stay full. Also, if you know of a community group looking for an evening or weekend letting venue, let us know as we have beautiful school rooms and hall we can hire.

85% would support your child working in a school. I believe it is the best job in the world, especially in Primary schools – hundreds of happy learners, to make into our future world changers – what's not to love! Hopefully one day a Glebe child will be the next Glebe Headteacher for the next generation!
