The week ahead 22nd February 2026

Dear Glebe Families,

We hope you've all had a fantastic week – Valentine's day, Shrove “Pancake” Tuesday, Ramadan beginning, sun, rain, sleet, snow, wind and daffodils starting to come up! What a week!!!

And did you see Britain's Got Talent is back on TV?  Well, don't forget we do our own Glebe's Got Talent with the competition heats starting at the end of May 2026, and the winners performing at our Summer Festival on SATURDAY 11TH JULY:

We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow, MONDAY 23RD FEBRUARY!

(and Y1 children, don't forget your TEDDY BEARS!)

It is a short half term of just under 5 weeks as term ends on Thursday 26th March at 1.30pm with the EASTER BONNET PARADE 12.30pm-1.30pm.  We are packing a lot into 5 weeks so keep checking calendars and this weekly PING so you don’t miss out!

A mini-reminder , this half term Y2, Y4 and Y6 all have PE on a MONDAY with Mr Priest.  We will send a reminder about PE days for this half term tomorrow.

FIVE REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD:

1. WORLD BOOK DAY

On THURSDAY 5TH MARCH (not this week, but the week after) it is World Book Day.  We love to celebrate reading and dressing as a book character, meeting an author and having an on-site book shop are some of the ways we GO ALL IN like the national campaign!  Do think about your child’s outfit now. If you have an outfit from previous years which your child no longer fits in, we would love to have it to refresh and reuse for our community, so every child has something magical to wear that day.  Send donations to the office, and Mrs Esmond will have them available for families needing new outfits by the end of next week.

2. IFTAR EVENING WEDNESDAY 11TH MARCH

We have sent a PING for the IFTAR Evening.  Whilst it is a part of Islam, a bit like our Holi festival last year, this is for EVERYONE!  It is a time to come together to eat, enjoy calming activities, and be a part of our school community.  Check the PING sent before half term and confirm your attendance by WEDNESDAY please.

3. CLASS DOJO STORY

We launched this on 6th February and it is free for all families.  Look for the link sent in PING on 6th February under My Messages to get logged in.  The percentage of families who have already started seeing what is happening in their child’s class over the week AND the number of positive praise points their child receives are:

LUCY "The Space” Family Support Idea for the Week:
Talking to Your Child About Worrying Events

Many children today are growing up with instant access to news—from TV and social media to conversations at home and school. Stories about such as violence at schools, war, famine, natural disasters, and climate change can be frightening, even if children don’t fully understand them. Some may feel confused, anxious, or powerless.

It’s important that children feel safe asking questions and are given clear, age-appropriate explanations. Reassurance, structure, and honest conversations help them feel more secure and supported.  Ensure that you feel calm and able to talk by concentrating on your breath, giving yourself a 5 minute pause or a moment of meditation.

🗣️ How to Talk to Your Child About Their Fears

Listen first
Ask what your child knows or has heard. This helps you understand what they’re worried about and gently correct any misunderstandings.

Keep it age-appropriate
Younger children need simple explanations. Older children may want to talk about fairness, justice, and how things affect them and others.

Be honest, but reassuring
It’s okay to admit that some things are serious or uncertain—but also to offer comfort.
You might say:
“Yes, there was a stabbing in a school nearby, but they are extremely rare. Everyone from the school to the police are working together to help those affected and to keep people safe.”

Encourage questions
Let your child know it’s always okay to talk to you about what they’re hearing or feeling—even if you don’t have all the answers.

Limit news exposure
You don’t need to shield children completely but avoid overwhelming them. Be mindful of news playing in the background or adult conversations they may overhear.

❤️ Helping Children Feel Safe and Empowered

  • Maintain routines – Predictable daily structure helps children feel secure.
  • Talk about helpers – Focus on people and organisations working to make things better.
  • Inspire action – Helping children make small positive changes (e.g. recycling, supporting a cause) helps build resilience and agency.
  • Encourage emotional expression – Let children draw, talk, write, or play out what they’re feeling.
  • Model calm behaviour – Children look to adults to judge how serious or scary something is.

🧠 Signs of Anxiety to Watch For

Some children may struggle to express worry with words. Look for:

  • Trouble sleeping or nightmares
  • Changes in appetite or mood
  • Asking the same questions repeatedly
  • Physical complaints (e.g. stomach-aches, headaches)
  • Withdrawal or clinginess

Sometimes we could all do with someone to talk to.

If you would like to meet Lucy Cohen for a confidential and non-judgemental chat about you, your child, or any other worries, they are available on Tuesdays from 9-10am.

You can call/text 07469705850 or email lucy@schoolscounsellingpartnership.co.uk
