The Week Ahead 5th May 2025

Dear Glebe Families,

I hope you have had an enjoyable long weekend – this is your Monday PING, not SUNDAY PING!

Thank you so much for supporting our PTFA “Flash lolly” sale on Friday. It was such a success and will hopefully be repeated as we have more warmer weather. We really appreciate the parents doing the shopping, sorting a float, and getting it set up for our children to enjoy at such short notice.

We have also set the date for our SUMMER FESTIVAL! It will be on SATURDAY 12TH JULY from 11am-2pm, and we want our whole community to be there—and to bring a friend, too! Big events like this need lots of volunteers, so if you can spare us time setting up on Friday night or early Saturday morning during the fair or packing up afterwards, please email office@glebe.harrow.sch.uk with your name and mobile number, and we will pass on your email and mobile number.   Also, please share the image below so everyone has it in their diary!

Your fundraising this year is helping us buy more playground equipment and new books for our revamped library and our class libraries – thank you in advance from our 560 children!

FIVE REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD:

1. VE DAY THURSDAY 8TH MAY: Non-uniform day

To celebrate this national event, it is NON-UNIFORM and we ask children to wear red, white and/or blue coloured clothing for the day!  They will participate in various activities during the day to learn about the importance of this day.  Look out for bunting going up this week!

2. FREE “RISE AND SHINE” BREAKFAST CLUB

My thanks again to our team for getting this going and you for making great use of this – we had 100 children on Friday!  The more children attending, the more funding we receive, the more likely we can keep this service going for all our Reception to Y6 children!  We have also been in the news online last week.

3. GLEBE’S FUTURE UPDATE

I am happy to stay at Glebe and am very proud to be your headteacher.  We are awaiting confirmation from the Department of Education to start the formal consultation on joining The Pegasus Partnership Trust – this should begin by the end of term, and our Governors will keep you updated.  Regardless, we focus on teaching and learning, enriching our offer to children and doing more together as a community.  Thanks, as always, for your support!

LUCY "The Space” Family Support Idea for the Week:

When your child feels angry…

Everyone can feel angry at times, often the feelings beneath the anger are sadness, hurt or fear: if we allow ourselves to feel those feelings, the anger can melt away.

If you child is angry, first try to take some deep breaths and remind yourself that this is not an emergency: if you can stay calm, your child will feel safer and won’t feel the need to defend back with anger. Then, try to listen to your child so they feel their emotions are being heard and name them: “Oh, this seems so hard for you… you are letting me know that you feel I don’t understand you… I imagine that might feel terrible and lonely for you…”

If your child is being unsafe, it is important to set limits still and also offer some compassion: “You’re feeling so angry! You can use your words or stomp your feet to show me just how mad you are. No hitting. Hitting hurts.” Stay as close as you can whilst your child is having an outburst and if they need some space, do take a step back but reassure them that you are right here whenever they feel ready to come closer to you. Keep empathising with their feelings and only try to teach or explain once everyone feels much calmer and you feel you have reconnected. They will not be able to take in your words whilst they have “flipped their lids”.

It can be difficult to respond in this way and to stay calm when emotions are running high, but every time you manage to, know that you are helping your child develop new ways of having their big feelings!
