The Week Ahead 27th April 2025

Dear Glebe Families,

A very warm welcome back to the summer term!  We hope you had a fantastic break and are looking forward to warmer, drier months ahead (hopefully)!

A welcome back to Mrs Hogan, who has returned to Nursery following her maternity leave – good to have you back! We are also pleased that Mrs Samji will start a phased return to Glebe over the coming weeks – she has been missed, and we are delighted that her son is getting better every day.

As always, please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We also appreciate your compliments.  It was lovely to have such great feedback from our Easter Bonnet Parade last term, and we really appreciated your appreciation of the event.

FIVE REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD:

1. CLASS MIXES

When we had our “Meet the Teacher” events back in September, we let you know that children’s classes will be mixed at the end of Year 1 going into Year 2, and at the end of Year 4, going into Year 5.  We do this for a number of reasons:

- children learn to create new friendships with other children as part of getting them secondary school ready where they may be a new child amongst 250 other children; they also avoid being over dependent over just one friend and learn to share friends with other children

- as with all Harrow schools, there is mobility across the school when children leave and new children arrive – we look to ensure a balance of boys and girls, children with english as an additional language and/or special educational needs across each class in a year group.

-some children are great friends but not necessarily great learning role models for each other and separating their classes will help each child focus more on their learning.

At the end of this academic year, we will also be mixing Year 3 classes going into Year 4 classes as there has been mobility, and we want to address the points above for them.

You will appreciate organising 90 children into three balanced classes is a challenge.  If you had a particular thought or consideration for the current teachers to look at ahead of mixing classes, let your child’s class teacher know.  I trust our teachers who know our children really well, to make the right choices to move all children forwards.

2. VE DAY

On Thursday 8th May, the nation will celebrate Victory in Europe Day, known as VE Day, on its 80th anniversary.  This will be an in-school event with various activities on for the children.  Please note it will be a NON-UNIFORM DAY where we ask everyone to wear red, white, and/or blue clothes as part of our patriotic identity being British!

3. OUR LOGO AND UNIFORM

You will have noticed we have updated signage around the school as the final phase of implementing the Glebe logo.  From September, ONLY the new logo should be on any school uniform at the end of this three-year phased roll-out.

Please ensure you plan ahead for this in September and remember our new Y5 and Y6 are all expected to wear a Glebe tie and a shirt as part of getting them secondary school ready.

Families accessing any benefits are entitled to support for the cost of uniform – let Miss Esmond know and she can help you: office@glebe.harrow.sch.uk

LUCY "The Space” Family Support Idea for the Week:

Bedtime Fears

All children will go through a time when they find it difficult to go to bed and fall asleep. They may tell you they are scared of the dark. However, it is actually what their “worry brain” is telling them about those things that is making them so frightened. This is why reassuring them that everything is fine, doesn’t usually work.

How can parents help?

By empowering your child to be the boss of their own brain and teaching them to not always believe their “worry brain”. It works really hard to keep them safe, but this means that it can create (often scary!) stories whenever it doesn’t understand or know something. Always empathise first: “I know you’re feeling scared right now…” Then, try not to rush to reassure. Instead, show your child that they have a choice: “OK—let’s hear from worry, what is it telling you?  You can then be curious about their fears and even get creative with them: can they draw a silly version of the monster? It can also help to have a “worry time” earlier in your schedule, so that your child doesn’t need to talk about them just before bedtime.
