The Week Ahead 13th October 2024

Dear Glebe Families,

We wanted to share our 1930s day with you and Mrs Esmond has put together a brilliant video!  It is on our website but only to our families with the link.  We would like to have it on our front page as it is brilliant!  Have a look and if you have any queries, let us know by WEDNESDAY 16TH OCTOBER:  (See your Ping message for the link)

FIVE REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD:

1. COLLINS BOOKS

We have now issued logins for families to access Collins Books and all teachers also have their new logins.  Reception to Y3 will start selecting texts which will appear in the Collins Hub app.  It will match their reading level.  If nothing has appeared by next Friday, let us know.  They will also bring home a library book each week.  We are spending £4000 on new phonics books for Reception to Y2 working on phonics will have books sent home after half term.

2. REMINDER: FLU IMMUNISATIONS

We sent you all a school PING message on 23rd September (it may be under “My Messages”). The link to complete to protect your child from seasonal flu illnesses is here – you are also asked to complete it if you are choosing for your child NOT to have the flu immunisation: https://nwl.schoolvaccination.uk/flu/2024/harrow  Please complete by FRIDAY 18TH OCTOBER (or ideally today!)

3. PROSPECTIVE PARENT/CARER TOURS

I have been proudly doing tours for families looking for their child’s first school or considering changing schools to join Glebe – we are causing a positive stir in our community! They happen every Wednesday morning with me, another senior leader and shortly a couple of our new Prefects! (More on them in the October Glebe Gazette!)  If you know of families looking or considering, please let them know and ask them to email office@glebe.harrow.sch.uk

4. PARKING OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL

As a headteacher it is a challenge juggling running a large primary school, with a 90-year-old building, a constant school improvement drive and focusing on over 650 children and staff and 100 parents/carers.  It is getting frustrating that I am also having to manage complaints from residents, local businesses and our own families regarding illegal parking outside the school making roads unsafe for our children, and blocking residents driveways too – one resident with medical needs was blocked in by a car and then insulted by a Glebe parent which is unacceptable.  Please, all of us, do our bit within the community we live in.  Obey the law and be considerate. Make a positive difference TOGETHER!  For those who do, I personally thank you very much!

LUCY "The Space” Family Support Idea for the Week:

What to do when you feel your anger rising…

We all have triggers- our children certainly do and so do we! So, what can you do when you feel your temper rising? Quite often,  you do not need to DO anything… other than notice what you are feeling, breathe your way through it and restore yourself to calm before you act.

How can parents help?

First of all, know your triggers. If you can catch it early, you are more likely to feel you have a choice in your response.  If it is safe to do so, just hold still and breathe. Work hard to see things from your child’s point of view: what do they need your help with? Finally, always choose love, not fear, set a limit but do it with empathy, move into a playful mode and always be ready to offer a hug.
