The Week Ahead 13th July 2025

Dear Glebe Families,

What a truly #gloriousglebe weekend! The sun shone, our community attended in their numbers, our staff hosted 90th anniversary tours for former Glebers, our PTFA delivered amazingly, so many volunteers of staff and parents plus external vendors offered such a great variety of options for you, the kind raffle donators, and of course our Y6s being so entrepreneurial...everyone made it a really special day!  Thank you to you, our staff, our community, and of course, our children, for creating a day to remember.

A special thanks to the core PTFA team who have worked behind the scenes for months – Bhavnita, Ash, Becca, Metul, Reena, Ajay and the many others who have been involved more intensely in the last month.  We really appreciate you! Be a part of our 2025-26 plans by messaging Bhavnita to be more involved in the PTFA on 07930 403814

FIVE REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD:

1. BOOKS, READING AND A LIBRARY BOOK RETURNS!

Reading gives your child access to their future!

Can we ask you to have a search today for any school library books and return them tomorrow or by the end of the week at the latest?  We need to stock check what we have before we place a book order over summer for over £4000 of new books, thanks to your fundraising efforts with the PTFA!  This also includes books children have from class libraries, or any books you would like to donate to the school.

The Education Secretary in the Department for Education is urging parents to swap scrolling with reading as she launches a National Year of Reading for 2026 to boost kids’ literacy and life chances - have a look at their online blog by clicking here.

We have also identified great reading choices for your child as they move to their next year group: https://www.glebe.harrow.sch.uk/Reading/

You could pop to the library over summer to see them and remember Harrow libraries offer the Summer Reading Challenge https://libraries.harrow.gov.uk/digital-content/library-services/childrens-library-service/fantastic-summer-club

And don't forget to register for the READING ALOUD CHALLENGE over summer - nearly 100 Glebe children are already signed up:  https://www.readaloudchallenge.co.uk/join/BMXS-EKWF-8E19

2. SEND IN A CARRIER BAG

Whilst learning continues to 22nd July in their current exercise books, children can now bring home exercise books they had filled from Autumn and Spring Term. Please pop a couple of carrier bags in your child’s book-bag so we can start to send these books home over the week.

3. SEPTEMBER UNIFORM

We have put a few reminders out over the last few months, that come September we are asking all children to be in the correct uniform, with the new logo on, including book bags.  Y5 and Y6 next year should be in a shirt and tie, not t-shirts.  If you need support with uniform purchasing, pop into the office or see Miss Esmond who will be able to support you.  Our uniform expectations are on our website: https://www.glebe.harrow.sch.uk/Parents/School-Uniform/

It is back to normal uniform this week as the weather is cooler.

LUCY "The Space” Family Support Idea for the Week:

Routines

Children go through changes every day, which can cause anxiety. However, they can handle change best if they know it is coming and if it happens within a familiar routine. Routines help children feel safe and secure. It also helps them to develop self-discipline.

How can routines help?

Routines help to avoid power struggles. You are not bossing your child around: doing your homework before you get to watch TV and brushing your teeth before bed is just what we do at this time of day. Routines also reduce anxiety, which means that children are more likely to listen and cooperate with you. They also help children become more independent and feel empowered, leading to fewer power struggles. Having routines at home that are clear to everyone also helps you to build in some very precious quality time to connect with your child.

GETTING INVOLVED IN SCHOOL

Lots of keen volunteers so Miss Esmond will contact you ready for September!  Also there is a wealth of talent ready to be shared with our community – we will contact you via PING and thank you for your interest!

FOCUS ON HANDWRITING

Overall, you are firm believers on reinforcing high expectations for handwriting.  Great!  We agree!  And we also agree about the need to type fast too.  Lots on handwriting next year and your support will be key!

YOUR DREAM JOB...

Just 17% of you are in your dream job 🙁  It is never too late!  Then we have a real mix of wanting to work from home or more creative or AI use...why not learn a new skill?  It is never too late to learn something new – and what a great role model you would be for your child 😊
