The Week Ahead 12th January 2024

Dear Glebe Families,

We hope you are well!

We have been discussing an issue we’ve noticed with children swapping and trading cards. Many children, particularly in Years 3 to 6, enjoy trading items like football cards or Pokémon cards (something many of us remember doing as children!). Instead of banning these activities, we want to help children engage in them appropriately. Together with our children, we’ve created a “Guide” to ensure these games are played fairly and with minimal disagreements.

The key rule is that card trading should only happen in the playground, not in the classroom. It’s important to note that not all children participate in this, and there’s no expectation for anyone to buy cards.
We’ll share more details next week!

FIVE REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD:

1. THE SNOW PLAN
Please make sure you have read the PING sent last Monday at about 4pm on how we are approaching any snow/ice days. We contacted the council and are delighted they have listened, and Glebe Avenue and D’Arcy Gardens have been gritted, which helps us to have safe access in the wintry weather. Whilst snow never arrived last week, it is good that everyone knows our approach should it come.

2.SWAP SHOP
Building on the success of the Christmas jumper initiative, we thought we would trial a 'swap shop.'
As we head into Spring, many of us do a clear-out of old clothes. We are asking for donations of children's everyday clothes, which we will refresh and make available for families to help themselves—at no cost.

These items will be displayed in the playground (weather permitting). If you have any donations, please place them in a carrier bag clearly marked with ‘swap shop.’

Collection date for clothing: Week beginning 13th January – 24th January
Swap shop: Tuesday 4th February, 3:00 pm in the playground.

3. PiXL and READING
PiXL is an assessment system we use which enables us to be more forensic with analysing data, unpicking types of questions children struggle with and delivering targeted support. PiXL also offers a wealth of support for school and home. We attach their latest reading newsletter to give ideas on how families can support reading at home.

LUCY "The Space” Family Support Idea for the Week:
LEARNING and WANTING to do the right thing
Children develop their ‘inner compass’ every day. They learn primarily by the example you set and the family culture that you create.
The most powerful way to teach a child a skill is to model it. When you treat others (including your child) with respect, apologise and regulate your emotions, your child learns to do the same. In order to help your child WANT to do the right thing, make sure your limits are reasonable and age-appropriate. Set them up for success so they can feel good about being someone who does the right thing. Finally, help your child repair relationships following any damage and remember to stay connected: when your child feels you are on their side, they are more likely to WANT to follow your lead.
