The Week Ahead 11th May 2025

Dear Glebe Families,

A week of sunny weather really makes a positive difference, doesn't it?  The school celebrated VE Day in the sunshine which was fabulous.  If you have not yet seen the video from the day, click here: https://www.glebe.harrow.sch.uk/WholeSchoolEvents/

Also, here’s a little something we noticed…

While chatting about VE Day and the idea of being evacuated during the war, we were surprised by how many children don’t know their own address or postcode! It took us right back to when we were children, learning our home phone number by heart – a rite of passage back then!

But in today’s digital world of saved contacts and smart devices, it seems many of our children haven’t picked that up. So why not have a family chat about your home address and an emergency contact number? It’s one of those handy life skills we hope they never need in a crisis – but it’s so important that they do know it, just in case!

Lots going on at Glebe so we want to keep reminding you!  This week we have SEVEN reminders (not the usual five)!

SEVEN REMINDERS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD:

1. FRIDAY 16TH MAY  NON UNIFORM DAY FOR A £1 DONATION

This FRIDAY will be a non-uniform day to raise money towards funding our in-school mental health support work.  In these times of tight budgets, the extra things we do are not sustainable, so all we can do as a community to help is appreciated.  We ask for a £1 donation towards “The Space” counselling service, the work of Lucy, whom your children all know.  Thanks for your support in advance.

2. OUR GLEBE PTFA SUMMER FESTIVAL – SATURDAY 12TH JULY 11am-2pm

We are excited to bring a Summer Festival to our Glebe community and the local area, but we desperately need volunteers and donations to make it a success. If you can help with time or food donations or if you work for a company that can donate a raffle prize, we would love to hear from you! A PING was sent on Friday with the details for signing up!

3. BIRTHDAY GIFTS FOR THE CLASS

Bringing in a gift on your child's birthday is such a kind gesture! This is a reminder that we have a number of children with nut allergies who only have halal products. To reduce risks, we asked families to donate a book for the class to share rather than sweets and chocolates/party bags. If you could support this, it would be appreciated.

4. GLEBE'S GOT TALENT (GGT)

Hopefully, your children have told you about this!  We are holding our own "GLEBE'S GOT TALENT" competition!  Every child can participate if they wish to share their talent!

The process will be:
CLASS HEATS - each class will choose their winner (19th and 20th May)
YEAR GROUP SEMI FINALS - each year group will choose a year group winner (22nd May)
WHOLE SCHOOL FINALS - a GGT Panel will pick their winning act (6th June)

ALL the finalists will perform at our SUMMER FESTIVAL on Saturday 12th July!

5. LOST PROPERTY - IT WANTS TO BE WANTED AGAIN!

We are displaying unnamed jumpers, coats, hats, lunch bags and water bottles, in the playground at the end of each day.  It is in the middle of the playground by the white doors and Miss Patel and Miss Esmond will be there.  Please check it with your child.  We had 18 unnamed coats on Friday!!!

LUCY "The Space” Family Support Idea for the Week:

Developing Friendship Skills

School is the place where children learn to navigate the world of friendships. At this age, alliances often shift and change. Learning to make friends and get along with peers can cause some distress to most children.

How can parents help?

It is important to listen to your child’s experiences with peer challenges. Instead of telling them what to do, help them problem-solve, and also to clarify and understand their feelings. It is always best to stay away from taking sides with either child- offer empathy for all of your child’s feelings and also reflect together on how their peer might be feeling. Coach your child to stand up for themselves using their words and help them learn to express their needs rather than attacking their friend. It is helpful to practice this together!  Remind them that 'The Space' is available at school if they want to talk to Lucy.
